Lloyd Richard Cayes

Lloyd Richard Cayes, 91, of Wake Forest, passed away Saturday evening, February 21, 2026, at his home. Born in Plymouth, New Hampshire, on January 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Malcolm Cayes and Marion Downing Cayes.

Lloyd was a proud graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. 

He embarked on a distinguished career as a civil engineer with the Federal Highway Administration, spanning more than 30 years. His work contributed to national highway and bridge engineering research. Lloyd was a published author and contributor to federal transportation and infrastructure studies, lending his expertise to projects that strengthened the nation’s transportation systems. 

For six years, Lloyd pursued one of his lifelong passions by opening and operating a car repair shop, serving automotive enthusiasts from across the country. Though he later returned to complete his engineering career, his love of automobiles remained constant.

Lloyd possessed a fierce competitive spirit that carried into everything he did. Whether on the athletic field in his youth, on the golf course, or behind the wheel at autocross events with the Metropolitan Washington region of the Sports Car Club of America, he approached every challenge with intensity and enthusiasm. Following his high school years, his competitive drive and athletic ability brought him recognition as New Hampshire Athlete of the Year. This distinction reflected the determination that would define every chapter of his life. His love of cars extended beyond engineering and repair; he embraced the thrill of competition and the camaraderie of fellow racers. An accomplished golfer, he enjoyed success in senior tournaments and valued both the strategy and sportsmanship the game demanded.

He is survived by his son, Bryan Cayes & wife Karen of Wake Forest; grandson, Daniel Cayes & wife Erica of Carmel, CA; brother, Larry Cayes & wife Karen of Dunwoody, GA; along with extended family and many friends who will cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Croft Cayes.
